The Burgundy vineyards

The Burgundy vineyards are mainly concentrated alongside the road leading from Dijon to Mâcon. Here, more than anywhere else, man has adapted the grape varieties to the differents types of soil and the different climates. This is why, here in Burgundy, every village, every winegrower and even every vineyard produces its own unique wine. From North to South, the vineyards are like a mosaic of different soils giving wines with different aromas, colours and tastes. The Burguindy vineyards can be subdivided into 4 main areas: la Côte de Nuits, la Côte de Beaune, la Côte Chalonnaise et le Mâconnais.

La Côte de Nuits

The Côte de Nuits is situated just South of Dijon and is the most Northern of the 4 main wine areas of Burgundy. Some of the finest and most prestigious wines of the world, such as the Romanée-Conti, Gevrey-Chambertin or even Clos de Vougeot, are produced in this part of Burgundy.

La Côte de Beaune

All around Beaune, the landscape is marked by the vineyards. One can find very good red wines here and some of the most prestigious names of white Burgundy wines are from the Côte de Beaune:  Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, etc.
In the middle of all the vineyards, Beaune is an attractive city full of traditions and places of interest. The famous old hospital ("Hospices de Beaune") with the typical Burgundy roof tiles is an absolute must for every on,e visiting Burgundy.

La Côte Chalonnaise

This part of Burgundy is a little less prestigious than its Northern neighbours, however the Côte Chalonnaise offers very good quality wines at reasonable prices. The names Rully, Givry, Montagny or even Mercurey have an excellent reputation. Chalon sur Saône (photography was invented here) is an interesting city in this area and many charming villages (like Buxy, Saint Gengoux  le National or Mercurey) are worth a visit.

Le Mâconnais

From Tournus to Mâcon, on the west side of the river Saône, the Maconnais vineyard is mainly renowned for its white wines (Pouilly-Fuissé, Saint Véran, etc.). The undulating landscape of the Maconnais is marked by the famous Roche de Solutré.
