La Roche de Solutré
This high calcerous rock is situated very near to Pouilly, famous for its delicious white wines. When avoiding busy days, like all major Bank holidays, it is fairly easy to park your car on the bottom of the Roche de Solutré and climb the rock to the top following the well marked out foot path. On top of the Roche de Solutré (493 m), you will enjoy the magnificent panoramic view over the vineyard and the roche de Vergisson (only a few kilometres away). When the weather is good and clear, one can sometimes even get a glimpse of the Alps…
To get to the top, you will need approx. 45 minutes (to go and to come back). Climbing up is relatively easy, however a few steep climbs here and there. It is without a doubt one of the nicest strolls of Southern Burgundy.
The Prehistoric site
Solutré is first of all known for its impressive rock, however, the archaeological site is also remarkable. The site has been a hunting place for Palaeolithic men for over 25.000 years (from 35.000 BC to 10.000 BC).
The Prehistoric MuseumA museum has been made in the rock to display all the things found on the archaeological site. It presents through its impressive collection the evolution of techniques used for making tools, explanations on the Palaeolithic civilization and the flora and fauna of that era. Besides the things permanently displayed, the museum regularly hosts temporary expositions.
