The fact that the South of Burgundy counts a large number of Romanesque monuments is easily explained by the big influence of the Abbey of Cluny during the Middle Ages. Following the abbeys of Cluny and Tournus, dozens of Romanesque churches were built all over the South of Burgundy, most of them are very well preserved. Chalon sur Saône is the second biggest city of Burgundy (after Dijon) and is the most important city in Southern Burgundy. Chalon is certainly not the biggest in number of inhabitants, as the total number of inhabitants is just over 50.000. The city is situated along the river Saône.
