The fact that the South of Burgundy counts a large number of Romanesque monuments is easily explained by the big influence of the Abbey of Cluny during the Middle Ages. Following the abbeys of Cluny and Tournus, dozens of Romanesque churches were built all over the South of Burgundy, most of them are very well preserved. We invite you to discover and explore some of these hidden Romanesque treasures of Southern Burgundy.

Clessé

This charming wine growing village offers us a beautiful example of primitf Romanesque art with its 11th Century church. The church has a magnificent octogonal bell-toxer   Ce charmant village viticole possède un très bel exemple d'art roman primitif avec son église du 11e siècle. L'église possède un très beau clocher octogonal and glazed roof tiles.

Blanot

This church also dates back to the 11th Century. The church has a roof of roofing stones and was built on an old necropolis. Its priory was added during the 12th century.

Ameugny

This 12th Century church was built with limestone, giving it a beautiful red colour.

St Hippolyte

This former priory church (contigious with the old covent) was built during the 11th Century. The remarkable bell-tower of the church can be seen from a far distance. The bell-tower however does not date back to the 11th Century, as it has been enlargened during the religious wars.

Malay

Just above an elegant square bell-tower, this 12th Century Romanesque church depended directly from the Abbey of Cluny.

Chapaize

This beautiful, unusually high church overlooks the surrounding plain area. It was built around the year 1000 andis the only remaining thing of a monastery.

Brancion

The village of Brancion is situated on top of a hill and has a beautiful 12th Century church. This Romanesque St-Pierre church is situated on the edge of the village, offering a magnificent view over the village of La Chappelle-sous-Brancion and the surrounding area.

Saint Martin de Laives

Situated on the hills of Sennecey le Grand, this Romanesque church is almost one thousand years old. You will see this church from a far distance, from the Route Nationale 6. The Saint-Martin church can be visited on request, and a little climb is necessary to get to the church.
